“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” – Seneca, Roman philosopher
In a time when people typically change jobs every few years, I recently celebrated my ninth year with the same company. For the last six of those years I have been a DBA. At first it was in a Junior position, then shortly afterward I found myself the full-time DBA. During this time, I have grown not only as a DBA, but as a manager, a colleague and an employee. But alas, the time has come to stretch and grow in other ways. So I find myself at the beginning of an end.
But this also means that I will soon find myself at the beginning of a new beginning; a new adventure.
And now that I have shared this with you, you may be thinking, “so where will he go, what will he do?” Great questions! A new door has opened for me and that is all I’m saying at this point.
Stay tuned. All. Will. Be. Revealed.
Oooo, congrats, man! Awesome. Now you’ve got me singing Semisonic. Best song: She’s Got My Number.
Thank you sir.
Congratulations Tom. I am excited for you.
Thanks John!
Hoping you’re staying on the SQL scene but good luck with your new venture whatever it might be.
Thanks Mark, I will still be involved with SQL.
Congrats. 9 Years is a long time for one company; you’ve done well there.
Thanks Karen.
Congrats! Hope the move works out well for you!
yeah, me too! but i’m not worried because I remember how you said my family was welcome to crash at your place anytime.
Congrats Tom! Wishing you all the best and good luck, but I don’t think you’ll need it.
Thanks Bob!
Congrats…if you want to do like LOST you can just leave it at that.
Thanks! I hadn’t thought about tying LOST together with this, I’ll give it some thought. But I don’t want to find myself laying in a bamboo forest anytime soon, that just seems like bad mojo.
SQLBatman once told me that he’d wish me luck on the new gig, but he was pretty sure I wouldn’t need it.
I’m pretty sure you don’t need it either. 🙂
Hooray for some other beginning’s end!
Hey! I remember that! Thanks for the kind words.
Congratulations, Tom. I know that your new adventure will be a rewarding one for you. Don’t forget the rest of us as you rocket towards DBA superstardom.

That’s exciting… you finally decided to take your show on the road! Though I do think the tutu is a bit much.
congrats on whatever opportunity you are embarking on.
Congrats, Tom. I can’t believe I just found out about this today! Maybe an email to me from you got buried in all the MVP emails (yes, I am still getting them).
When at a family get together right before I started at MS, I asked my aunt to guess where I was going to work. I told her that it was a company she knew. She guessed Apple and WAM Computers, my brother’s little shop where I worked part time back in 1996.
So, this must be a company that we know or, otherwise, you would probably not be so secretative about it.
That track is amazing, and I’m not even into that genre. I love it!
