Another Miracle Trip

This past weekend I took another trip up to Lake Placid. I wrote about my trip last year in a piece titled “Luck, Preparation, and Opportunity“, to this day one of my favorite blog posts I have written. With my upcoming job change the trip this year to Lake Placid seemed to be an opportune time to reflect upon both an end and a new beginning.

And as I started to draft an outline for this blog post I came across a post from Jeff Atwood today. In his post he embedded a video that, well, spoke to me. Now I know that most videos speak to everyone unless there is something wrong with your speakers. That’s not what I am saying here. What I am saying is that I found it amazing that as I was searching for the words to what I wanted to write, the Universe gave me a ten minute video that explained exactly what I was looking to say.

If you have ten minutes, you must watch this video.

I spent a good chunk of time this past weekend reflecting on a lot of things. Why did I feel the need to change jobs? Why now, as opposed to a year ago, or a year from now? What was it that was motivating me to make this change while I still have young children that need to be clothed and fed? Or perhaps something was calling to me, calling for me to come and help?

And so Lake Placid, home to what some call the “Miracle On Ice” over thirty years ago, continues to serve me as my own sacred ground. I enjoyed reading all of the guesses that people have for my new job and decided to give you a few more clues. You’ll find them in the video above. Leave any new guesses about my new job as comments below.

And I hope to see many of you next week at TechEd!

  1. I’m guessing that you’re going to work for Red-Gate. They have recently done experiments in giving people free reign for a few days to do whatever they want, and you recently wrote an article for Simple Talk, which is a service from Red-Gate. And I know they were looking for really great people and giving away iPads…not bad at all! Congratulations and enjoy!

  2. Awesome video. I think that when people reach a certain level of knowledge, there is some kind of inherited mandate to keep the knowledge alive by becoming mentors and sources of new ideas. Others become rock stars of their own kind.

    • that is a great way of interpreting the results. in a way it makes me think of the parallels to being a father, you want to share as much wisdom with your children as possible.

    • the video was amazing to me, mostly because of the timing of it all. with all the soul searching I have been struggling with recently, this video summed it all up in 10 minutes. thankfully it helped to affirm that I have made the right decision.

  3. You are going to be able to draw on a white board really fast with markers that don’t dry up? Just kidding…
