Like a lot of people, I want as much information as I can possibly get in the shortest amount of time. Think Keanu and the Matrix, except I don’t want to live in a pod of goo and have the base of my skull altered in order to accept downloads. But, if I can learn Kung-Fu that quickly, it may be worth it, tough call.
But since I live in the here and now I need to get my information the old fashioned way, by learning and reading it for myself. And even after reading I still need to practice, lots of practice, in order to get better at something. So, where to start? Why, on the fundamentals, of course.
I don’t care who you are or what you do for a living, if you do not take care of the fundamental core elements of your profession then you will never reach your true potential. That’s why you see a professional basketball team doing layups to start their warm-ups, or baseball players playing catch. And the same holds true for basic database design and modeling. Learn the basics and the bigger puzzles will become more manageable.
These six books would serve anyone looking to get a good base knowledge of the fundamentals, and that is why I gave them their own bookshelf. Enjoy.
