Let The People See Their MOM!

During the PASS conference this year I was informed by more than a few colleagues that their companies have MOM 2005, but they are not able to utilize it for their own needs. Why? Why would they not be allowed to work with the MOM administrator to customize MOM for even just a few things? If MOM agents are being loaded to the database servers, then it would cost roughly $0 to load the SQL Management Pack (which is probably already loaded anyway).

Why would anyone not want to allow for MOM to be used by their DBA’s to help effectively monitor their environment? It makes no sense to me, and I could not offer anyone any advice as to how to get their hands on their MOM. I suggested they start become good friends with the MOM administrator and hope to sway them over time, but honestly I was too stunned to think straight.

After giving it some though, I think I can offer a suggestion. What they need to do is to explain to someone that they have a tool that is scalable, customizable, and stable enough to provide effective monitoring for the database servers. It can replace some of the customized toolbox code that the systems have been relying on for these past few years, etc., etc. In the end, when they finally ask “how much”, you can say “Free. We already have it in place, I just need to get access.”

Then, if at that point they still say no, drop me a line. I would love to hear the excuse they offer you.

  1. Thanks for your talk. You helped me to know what to ask for. I was told today that I will be a MOM admin soon. Our MOM guru is in New York right now so it will probably be next week.
