PASS Orientation Committee

Or, as I like to call it, the O.C. Well, the O.C. needs your help. Just to recap, here is what is happening.

At the upcoming PASS Summit we want to implement a new program. It is an extension of the current Ambassador program (and until I get overruled I am going to call it the O.C.) The responsibility of an O.C. member will be to meet and greet a handful of first time attendees not only at the Summit but also making contact before the Summit. I have written about this before and most everyone seemed to believe it was a good idea. We want to move forward but we got stuck on some math.

Historically the number of people at a Summit for the first time is about one-third. That means we can have up to about 1,000 people there for the first time this November. My thought was to have maybe 7-8 people assigned to an O.C. member. Now, do some quick math and tell me: how many O.C. members do we need for this to happen? OK, I’ll make it easier for you, let’s assign 10 new attendees for each O.C. member. There, that’s easier to think about right? We need about 100 people in order to meet the needs of every first time attendee.

So, how many O.C. members do we have right now? A lot less than we need. Thus the need for this blog post.

We need your help to make this happen. If you want to volunteer your time as an O.C. member then contact nancy.nasso@sqlpass.org immediately. The deadline we have for this is the end of this week. Once we know the number of people we have to serve as O.C. members then we can calculate how many first time attendees can be placed into small breakout groups. The remaining attendees are not going to be left behind entirely, however, as we plan on asking them to attend the welcome reception about 30 minutes ahead of time for a brief orientation. More details about that will be coming shortly.

For now we just need people who are willing to help others to come forward and tell us they want to be a member of the O.C. Maybe I’ll get t-shirts made up or something. Or hats. Everyone loves hats, right?

  1. I already sent my email in. I’m on board, especially since I kept saying what a great idea it was. I want a nifty vest like the Ambassadors had. I kept forgetting to steal… no, keep… no, forget… I mean, I turned mine in like I was supposed to.

  2. I like the idea. I’ll have to send Nancy an e-mail. Wish we had this around when I was at my first Summit in ’06!

Let’s not forget that the Birds of a Feather lunch is also a great way for new attendees to meet some folks who share an interest. MVPs still have a little bit of time to sign up to host a table if they wish. 🙂 mike at straightpathsql DOT com
