Do You Make These 5 Database Design Mistakes? [SLIDESHOW]

create_index_orig_editedA while back I wrote a post on the five database design mistakes you don’t want to make. I always meant to build slides for the post but never seemed to have the time. I finally found a few odd moments here and there over the past few weeks and got a deck uploaded to Slideshare.

For a while I used to be surprised whenever I came across a poorly designed database. I would always stop and think to myself “Hey, didn’t this person have any knowledge of database systems?” These days I tend to have more empathy and I can understand how cost, benefit, and risks play a huge role into system at design time. I also understand that nothing ever stays the same. As systems get used over time, or become more popular, they often don’t scale as a result of the initial design.

And that’s when I get called in to offer my opinions.

So, in a way, the reason I see so many bad designs is because companies are at the point where they need to talk to someone that has seen many bad designs. Which is good for me, since I enjoy things like employment.

Anyway, you can find the slides at this link, or you can just view them here:

Good database performance starts with good database design. Avoid those five mistakes and you will find less of a need to hire people like me.
