Don’t beat yourself up over not knowing. I think our loved ones know when it’s the end and hold on until they’ve said goodbye, even if we don’t understand it at the time. Both my mom and mother-in-law died in situations very similar to yours, a few hours after we’d left, and before we’d even managed to get home.
