Thanks for the comment. I think you are spot-on, you want to find someone who knows (or can learn) the importance of the role and has the skills to help when issues arise. Oh, and being able to juggle multiple tasks, like a chef, helps as well.

Most questions I find to use during an interview are like a Microsoft Certification Exam. Both types of questions are important but I believe a lot of people leave these types of questions out of their interview. When looking to hire a DBA, I want someone who understands the basics of being a DBA and has strong troubleshooting skills. Two of the most important words for a SQL DBA are ‘it depends’ and if a DBA is unable to effectively troubleshoot a situation, you can have more problems down the road.

If you are serious about changing jobs then it is likely that you are applying to other positions. It is also a way of showing that you are in demand. Be honest but don’t go into too much detail, you don’t want to spend a great deal of time on this. If asked about names of who you have spoken to it is absolutely legitimate to say you prefer not to disclose that information at this stage.
