I once left a keynote session to sit with Donald Farmer for a few minutes while he was in the speaker room getting ready for his session later in the day. For the record, Buck Woody (blog | @buckwoody) was at the table with Donald as well, and this is the actual first recorded moment in history when Buck and I ever spoke. I think his first words were “Why would you go listen to Donald speak when you could hear me instead?”
Anyway, after about ten minutes I went back to my seat to find that my laptop had a brand new wallpaper image showing me a fine strapping young man from FDNY who took time from his busy schedule to have his photo taken along with some friends which were then assembled into a calendar format.
That’s right: I did not lock my laptop when I got up and left. And my “friends” decided to teach me a valuable lesson.
Always lock your devices. Always. Laptops, phones, iPad…nothing is safe.
Unless you really dig firemen.
Hilarious! A colleague of mine once hosted “Happy Hour” for the entire office one Sunny Florida Friday afternoon for the same reason. Since then, I have always given my three-finger-salute prior to leaving my station. Happy now, that there is the Win+L shortcut, as well 🙂
Karl,
Yes, I learned about Win+L shortly after this event.
I think what is most interesting is that you kept that picture this long. Hmm?
Jeffrey,
Yes, I have an incredible cache of similar photos. I call it ‘Google’.
I remember that. It was hilarious. I still use “naked firemen” as a refererence for not locking a system when you step away from it.
Grant,
I forgot you were there. Thanks. Adding you to “the list” now.
Now I know how you came up with your Avatar. It is the FDNY Wallpaper that you got that day. 🙂
Roy,
My wife made the avatar from the photo shoot I did for a certain software company (hint: rhymes with “breast”) a few years ago. She took my pic, made the silhouette, and I wanted the soothing green background. She put in the stars and BOOM, we had my logo.
Tom,
In your silhouette, why do you have your hands pointing back on themselves like flippers?
