PASS Summit Memories Blog Series – Day 22 – Locking Your Device

I once left a keynote session to sit with Donald Farmer for a few minutes while he was in the speaker room getting ready for his session later in the day. For the record, Buck Woody (blog | @buckwoody) was at the table with Donald as well, and this is the actual first recorded moment in history when Buck and I ever spoke. I think his first words were “Why would you go listen to Donald speak when you could hear me instead?”

Anyway, after about ten minutes I went back to my seat to find that my laptop had a brand new wallpaper image showing me a fine strapping young man from FDNY who took time from his busy schedule to have his photo taken along with some friends which were then assembled into a calendar format.

That’s right: I did not lock my laptop when I got up and left. And my “friends” decided to teach me a valuable lesson.

Always lock your devices. Always. Laptops, phones, iPad…nothing is safe.

Unless you really dig firemen.

  1. Hilarious! A colleague of mine once hosted “Happy Hour” for the entire office one Sunny Florida Friday afternoon for the same reason. Since then, I have always given my three-finger-salute prior to leaving my station. Happy now, that there is the Win+L shortcut, as well 🙂

    • Roy,

My wife made the avatar from the photo shoot I did for a certain software company (hint: rhymes with “breast”) a few years ago. She took my pic, made the silhouette, and I wanted the soothing green background. She put in the stars and BOOM, we had my logo.
