Tynted Vision

Last week there was a discussion about my use of Tynt to protect my blog content. I blogged about my use of Tynt and offered a copy of my book, DBA Survivor, to the person that could recommend a better message that I should include instead of the current one:

If you are not at thomaslarock.com, this material has been plagiarized by someone who steals content from others.

Yeah, not the nicest, but I didn’t see the need to be nice. But it turns out I was not listening to my inner Dalton who is usually there to remind me to be nice until it is time to not be nice. Thus the idea for the contest for which I had some wonderful suggestions. I couldn’t decide, so I asked a friend of mine, Jonathan Kehayias (blog | @SQLSarg), to help me pick a winner. Together we agreed that Steve Novoselac’s entry was the best:

Why code when you can download? – Use it – but remember, I wrote it – Thomas LaRock

So there you go, that is the message I will go with going forward. Steve, you win a book, just tell me where you want it mailed and I will get it out as soon as I dig myself out from Snowpocalypse ’11.

I am going to say a few words about my use of Tynt. I spent a good amount of time debating whether or not to use it. After all, it doesn’t prevent theft, right?

No, it doesn’t. If someone is going to steal content from my blog I can’t stop them. I also can’t stop someone from stealing my car, or breaking into my home, or even get people to stop asking me if I want bacon on that as if they don’t even know me. If someone has their mind set on something they are going to do it, period. And much as I still lock my car doors, or invest in a home alarm system, or carry my own bacon around with me for emergencies I am going to continue to use Tynt.

I will, however, take steps to make the user experience here a good one. If you feel that my use of Tynt is making things difficult for you please tell me. If you don’t tell me then I end up in the same place as President Skroob when he found out his ass was big. Do me a favor and just tell me that my ass is big, I can take steps to make corrections.
