24 Hours of PASS-Chat

The next version of 24 Hours of PASS starts up at 8AM ET tomorrow. I currently have no plans to do a live UStream this time around. One of the reasons I liked the UStream was that it offered the ability for participants to have the ability to chat. But we don’t need tyhat for this event because…

We put together a chat room for the event at http://www.sqlpass.org/24hours/fall2010/

Now, this chat room is an experiment for the most part. And if people start getting nasty then we will just shut it down, so let’s mind our manners, OK?

In a perfect world Microsoft would add in the ability for attendees inside of LiveMeeting to participate in a chat besides that lousy 1:1 private chat room. But since LiveMeeting is our weapon of choice right now then we needed to find a way to add in the ability for people to chat during the session. Why did we need this? Great question.

I wanted to give attendees in each session the ability to chat with one another while the session was happening, as a way to help people connect with one another during the event. While Twitter is nice, people haven’t really used Twitter during the first two 24 HoP events and (believe it or not) not everyone is using Twitter anyway. And while we still want people to ask questions for the presenters we also want people to be able to help each other while the session is happening.

So we went forward with the chat room and are interested to see how it is used over the next two days. I hope people find it valuable to some degree. If not then we haven’t lost a lot of time or effort.

I am really looking forward to the event over the next two days and hope to see you there.
