I think the creators of SO and SF know this is a risk, that is why they created the stackoverflow careers site, to allow the top users to leverage their reputation and to give them an additional reason keep using their “trilogy” of sites, rather than run off to the clones that pop up using their technology. It seems to be a plan to help ensure they keep the best/brightest to themselves and not lose them to the clones, which they helped create.

We’ll see if it works or not.
