Anyone Got the Time?

Had another little note scribbled down from Peter Myers talks this week. He started asking about why he always refers to a date dimension as something different than a time dimension, and noted that some people feel comfortable interchanging the two as if they meant the same thing.

Apparently, to someone like Peter, there is a very big difference. Peter would look to use a date dimension when the smallest unit of time would be a day, or an actual calendar date. This is very different than time, which would be (most likely) broken down into hours. God help you if you need to break things down into minutes, but if you do happen to need to slice and dice data for a call center you would still be looking to create a time dimension, not a date dimension.

As time goes on I am eager to get more involved in SSAS. Wait a minute. I meant to say that with each passing day I hope to get more involved with SSAS. No, that doesn’t sound right either. Apparently I should go back and measure the facts again before wondering about what dimension I am in.
