I’ve never even thought to ask. The idea actually seems a bit presumptuous to me. I’ve always felt that HR or the external recruiter should be my only point of contact with the company outside of the interview process. For everyone else, I would only respond to email, never initiate.

Then again I also rarely send thank your notes after the interview, and I’ve never gotten an offer at a place I’ve sent a thank you note to (but I don’t think I’ve sent five post-interview thank you notes in my life).

Regarding the dress thing, I agree to an extent. Yes wear a suit to a bank. However, in terms of the “interview is a two way street,” if you really hate wearing suits, don’t wear them to interviews, and you won’t end up with a job with strict dress codes. I don’t care either way so I’ll wear a suit to any job that isn’t a startup or in advertising , and a tie to 99% of interviews.
