Every now and then I have an idea. Yes, it’s true. Stop laughing. No, I didn’t say they were good ideas.
Sometimes I remember to write these ideas down, usually in Evernote in a notebook titled ‘General Core Dump’. Periodically I look at them and they become something more, perhaps a blog post of their own.
Most of the time they just sit there for months, doing nothing but reminding me about all of the things I wanted to write but haven’t found the time.
I was going through this list the other day and noticed that I had managed to turn some into actual posts. I decided I’d share with you this list. I think it gives some insight as to how the writing process works for me. I get an idea, I see how I can apply it and make a connection to something else, I write it down, and eventually I come back to it and see if I can put more words behind it.
I decided to share the current list with you today, before I update it by removing some of the things I have already written.
Here’s a view into my mind. You’re welcome.
HA is not the same as DR. Know this, or keep an updated resume handy.
‘AlwaysOn’ is not a feature of SQL Server, it’s a marketing term.
It’s clear to me that Server Core is a great way to keep people off of your server that don’t belong touching it anyway.
When it comes to passwords, size doesn’t always matter.
Azure is just like New Jersey: You don’t pay to get in, only to get out.
Good database performance starts with good database design.
Always remember those around you on your way up, because they’ll remember you on your way down.
Keep calm and recover from backups.
Or, Keep Calm and Blame the Network.
Anything worth doing is worth doing with bacon.
At some point your hardware will succumb to your bad code and design.
Metadata is like a love note to your future self.
Your dream job does not exist, you must create it.
That’s all for now. I’m going to erase these and start again keeping track of thoughts and ideas as they come to me.
Great list Tom. Seeing this motivates me me to get off my butt and complete a lot of small drafts I have about specific SQL server topics.
Welcome!
